What's New

New Parking & Drop-Off Plan to Start on May 29
To help with our ever-growing traffic and congestion issues, Lafayette has teamed up with DC Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. We will be piloting the new plan starting on Tuesday, May 29th through the end of school. To ensure safety around the school, all drivers will need to adhere to this new policy.  >>Details 

"Images 2012" On Sale
Lafayette’s much anticipated Art and Literary Anthology, Images 2012 -- with fun class photos and a piece of art and writing from every Lafayette student -- will be on sale Wednesday, May 23, at Arts Night II.

Peace Club Featured on the Evening News
Linda Ryden, Peace teacher at Lafayette, was featured on ABC 7's evening news. The segment is about Mayor Gray's plans to address bullying. Ms. Ryden's lunchtime Peace Club is highlighted as one effort to eliminate bullying in our local schools. The bullying piece begins about 5 and a half minutes into the segment. >>Watch now

Arts Night II (Wednesday, May 23, 6-8:30pm)
Our school is transformed into an art gallery! This second evening is for grades 2-5. Students will perform and artwork from every student will be displayed throughout the school.

Mom's Matinee at Avalon Theater (Thursday, May 24, 11:00am)
Join fellow moms (and dads) for a fun showing of "What to Expect When You're Expecting." Grab coffee and a pastry at the cafe and settle in for a relaxing show. Regular matinee prices apply.

State of the Schools: Ward 4 (Thursday, May 24, 5-8:00pm)
All parents are invited to join Chancellor Kaya Henderson and Councilmember Muriel Bowser to learn about the progress and plans for Ward 4 schools. Takes place at the Takoma Education Campus. Refreshments and childcare provided.>>Details

Field Day (Wednesday May 30 for Pre-K & K, Friday June 1 for 1st-5th)
All the kids look forward to the fun annual tradition. Be sure your child wears sneakers!

HSA General Budget Meeting (Thursday, June 7, 7:00pm)

"Step in Our World" Step Team Officially Kicks Off
On March 28th the Lafayette Step Team electrified an audience by performing various step routines using their entire body as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. The tradition of African stepping is rooted within the competitive schoolyard song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities.

Numerous Student Writing Contests
Pass the poetry or prose, please!  Several major writing contests are underway. Lafayette Girls Basketball Team Wins Title!
On Monday, 2/27 in the Deal Middle School gym the Bears won the DCIAA Elementary School Basketball Girls City Basketball Championship game. In a final score of 19-16 the girls beat Murch Elementary School. 5th grader Ana Fischer was named the game's MVP. Huge congratulations to the whole team and heartfelt thanks to Coach Jackson -- what an amazing first season as head coach! >>See game photos

Annie Bennett

Mom to three Lafayette children, Annie Bennett, has given countless hours to the school. Most recently she coordinated and executed the hugely successful on-line auction kick-off party. She was co-chair of the Fall Festival two years in a row. She has also served on the auction committee and spring fair committee for many years running. Annie is a volunteer who always pitches in when anything is needed.  And she brings her remarkable sense of style and attention to detail to everything she does. Thanks, Annie, for your dedication to Lafayette and your willingness to share your time and talents.
